Ed Haas specializes in professional liability and coverage matters, as well as real estate transactions and litigation. Until becoming a founding partner of AV rated Roeca Haas Hager LLP, he was a partner in the San Francisco office of Hinshaw & Culbertson, a national law firm based in Chicago. Previously, Ed was Of Counsel to the San Francisco firm of Long & Levit. Before affiliating with Long & Levit, he was Assistant Vice President and regional counsel to the Coldwell Banker Commercial Group and an associate with the firm of Severson & Werson, in San Francisco.

   
  Insurance Practice
   
 

In his insurance practice, Ed analyzes, drafts, and revises policies and policy language and represents insurers in coverage disputes and litigation. He provides coverage and claims handling advice to professional liability insurers. Over the years, Ed has handled major coverage and liability matters for many of the insurers writing professional liability policies. He has extensive experience in coverage issues under professional liability insurance policies, preparing complex coverage opinions and analyzing bad faith issues. Ed has assisted a number of insurers in drafting new policies and revising existing policy language. Based on his vast and varied experience with professional liability and coverage matters, Ed has been appointed on a number of occasions to serve as national and regional monitoring counsel for professional liability insurers on major claims.

   
  Real Estate Practice
   
 

In his real estate practice, Ed brings his several years experience as regional counsel for the Coldwell Banker Commercial Group, and representing principals and agents in all manner of real estate transactions and disputes. Ed’s practice includes representing both buyers and sellers in all types of real estate transactions and exchanges. He regularly represents landlords and tenants in leasing disputes and transactions. Ed has served as counsel for parties in commercial transactions involving office buildings, shopping centers, and industrial properties as well as residential properties. He also advises brokers on their disclosure obligations and fiduciary duties, and represents them in professional liability and other litigation.

   
  Professional Liability Practice
   
 

Ed’s professional liability practice includes extensive experience representing attorneys, real estate licensees, and other professionals in malpractice and related litigation. He has served as national loss prevention counsel for major lawyers’ E&O insurers, consulting with lawyers across the country to help them avoid claims, take corrective action, or mitigate damages. Ed has also been retained as an expert to testify on the standard of care in legal malpractice matters.

   
  Publications and Speaking
   
 

Ed has published and lectured regarding professional liability issues. He has written articles in the Daily Journal California Law Business, “Risk Particularly High for Real Estate Attorneys” and the State Bar’s California Real Property Journal, “Legal Malpractice and the Real Estate Attorney: Conflicts of Interest.” Ed has also presented panels and seminars to local bar associations and at Hastings College of the Law regarding legal malpractice. He has served as an adjunct professor at Hastings, teaching Legal Writing and Research.

   
  Education
   
 

Ed received his undergraduate degree, cum laude, from the University of California, Irvine, in 1974. He obtained his law degree in 1977 from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. While at Hastings, Ed was a member of the Moot Court Board and won an award for oral advocacy.

   
 

Ed is a member of the State Bar of California and various federal district court bars in California. He is also a member of the Bar Association of San Francisco.
